Does anyone ever deliberately design an UN-friendly map? Of course not. So what explains our name?
Knowing what to leave out of a map is very, very important! We remove the blah-blah-blah so you can focus on the important things. For example, we rarely include a legend. If every school on the map is clearly labeled “school”, then no explanation is needed in the legend. Same for rivers, roads, parks, etc. “Self-explanatory” is our favorite phrase.
Often, our North arrow does not point directly up. A little rotation might allow the map image to be larger. Larger is easier to read, so we do that.
One thing we never scrimp on is distance. We don’t distort streets or buildings like a cartoon. A mile is a mile—which matters if you’re pushing a baby stroller or have limited mobility.
We could say more, but words cannot capture that quality of user-friendliness. So pick up a guide, and use it. You’ll experience the User Friendly for yourself. Do your visitors deserve less than the best?
